Substitute Teacher Shortage Impacts Charles City, Area North Iowa Schools

A shortage of substitute teachers continues to plague school districts across Iowa and the nation.

That shortage has caught up to the Charles City School District, forcing school officials to extend the Winter Break for students by one day and switching Wednesday, December 22nd to a teacher work day. The district said last week that, through the end of November, there had been 378 instances this school year that could not be filled with subs. At last week’s school board meeting, Superintendent Mike Fisher says the supply of substitute teachers just doesn’t exist.

Fisher says the shortage of substitutes has further added to the COVID challenges of the 2020-21 school year.

Fisher says administrators, including himself, have had to help cover classes due to the substitute teacher shortage.

The Rudd-Rockford-Marble School District switched two days of classes to teacher work days prior to Thanksgiving because not enough teachers were available to cover classes. That translated into a 9-day holiday break for the students.
