Winter Driving Skills to be Tested Thursday, Friday in North Iowa

Winter driving skills are being put to the test in north Iowa with today’s freezing rain and sleet and Friday’s anticipated snow storm.

Trooper Tom Williams, with the Cedar Falls office of the Iowa State Patrol, says if your vehicle starts sliding or skidding on the roadway because of slippery conditions, try not to panic.

If you are unfortunate to have your vehicle leave the roadway and become stuck, Williams advises against venturing out on your own to get help.

Williams adds that you should also take precautions before you hit the road to ensure your safety. Make sure you have hats, gloves, blankets and a winter survival kit in your vehicle. You can also check road conditions in advance through www.511ia.org or  www.iowadot.gov/travel.
