The first case of the omicron variant of COVID-19 was confirmed in northeast Iowa last week.
The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) says it was detected in an unvaccinated person under 18 who lives in Black Hawk County. IDPH says Black Hawk County Public Health acted quickly to initiate contact with the family and remain in contact to monitor the health of the individual.
While it’s possible the Omicron variant could be in Floyd County, Public Health Administrator Gail Arjes said, at the county’s December Board of Health meeting, it wouldn’t likely be readily confirmed.
The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) confirmed the first case of the Omicron variant less than two weeks ago in a Minnesota resident with recent travel history to New York City. The Black Hawk County individual confirmed with the Omicron COVID variant is also believed to have been exposed while traveling out of the area.
