Additional Details Revealed in Mason City Fire, Murder Investigation

A Mason City man has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with a house fire this fall.

The Mason City Police Department says 28-year-old Dominick Daniel Degner has been arrested following the investigation of a woman’s body found in a  burning house the morning of September 7th. The Mason City Fire Department responded to 123 North Tennessee Avenue on a report of a  house fire shortly after 5:00 a.m. After the fire was extinguished a body was found in the home.

The victim was identified as 24-year-old Tonette Nadine Wolfe, who lived with Degner at the residence. According to the criminal complaint, authorities say Degner “caused fatal injuries, including blunt force trauma, a broken rib, a punctured lung and a partially broken bone prior to starting the fire. He then, with gasoline, set fire to the victim’s body and residence in the attempt to conceal the crime.”

Degner is being held on a $1 million bond at the Cerro Gordo County Jail.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and Iowa State Fire  Marshal assisted with the investigation.
