New Hampton Schools Takes Measures to Address Substitute Teacher Shortage

Like many rural school districts, New Hampton is trying to navigate the school year with a shortage of substitute teachers.

Superintendent Jay Jurrens asked the School Board Monday night to approve extra pay for the teachers they do have to help cover when short on subs.

The board approved the request which Jurrens says will only be in effect for the second semester, at the end of which they will re-evaluate the policy.

The board also approved a reinstituting a temporary change utilized last year that will allow full-time teachers flexibility with use of personal days.

Jurrens adds that the personal days policy change is also expected to be temporary.

New Hampton schools’ Winter Break begins Thursday, December 23rd, with classes resuming Monday, January 4th.
