Weather Delays for Schools Take Several Factors into Account

A Winter Storm Warning is scheduled to go into effect for much of our listening area tomorrow morning.

Forecast models indicate four to 10 inches of snowfall is possible across the region, which could lead to school delays or closures. Charles City Schools Communications Director Justin DeVore says officials try to make that call, based on weather, in a timely manner.

In addition to snowfall, school officials also keep an eye on wind chills. Despite wind chills below zero last week, most schools did not delay the start of classes.

DeVore adds that they take a variety of information into account when making decisions on school postponements or cancellations. He says sometimes that information can differ between the National Weather Service (NWS) in LaCrosse, which issues alerts for Floyd County, and that of the NWS in Des Moines.
