Northeast Iowa Woman Recent Winner of $50K in Powerball Drawing

A Winneshiek County woman recently won a $50,000 Powerball prize.
The Iowa Lottery says 38-year-old Michelle Rothmeyer of Calmar matched four of five white balls and the Powerball in the December 29th drawing. She was one number away from winning that night’s $483 million jackpot.
Rothmeyer purchased her winning ticket at Kwik Star in Calmar. She chose an easy-pick ticket, meaning that the lottery terminal randomly assigns numbers involved.
Rothmeyer told lottery officials, “I was on my lunch break and a friend had messaged, saying that there was a Powerball winner out of the Calmar store. So I scanned my ticket and was like, ‘Oh, it was me!’ It was crazy.”
Rothmeyer says she’ll use winnings to finish paying off their house, and since they had planned a vacation already, we might do it a little more extravagantly.”
