Charles City’s TLC Gets Second $750,000 State Grant

For the second time in the past year, The Learning Center (TLC) in Charles City is getting a large financial boost from the state as they get ready to renovate the 1970s portion of the former middle school building on North Grand Avenue.

TLC Director Pam Ost says they have received a second $750,000 grant from the 2022 Future Ready Iowa Child Care Challenge & Investing in Iowa’s Child Care Grants program comes at a time when their renovation project is facing increasing costs for materials and the availability of those materials.

Ost says they were expecting a $250,000 award at best and getting the three quarters of a million dollars comes as childcare operations across Iowa vying for state and federal funding. She says the state grant validates the important role childcare plays in the economic development of a community.

Ost adds that if there’s one positive from the pandemic is that it has fostered a better understanding of the need and continued growing need for childcare.

Ost says despite the increase in costs for the North Grand renovation, the project is still proceeding on schedule.
