Factors Causing Weather Delays, Cancellations Vary by School District

Frigid temperatures throughout January led to several school delays and cancellations across the area, but the guidelines on those weather-related decisions can vary from school district to school district.

Charles City Schools Communications Director Justin DeVore says the school is not likely to be delayed for a wind chill advisory, with delays or cancellations triggered by wind chill warnings, which, for Charles City and school districts to the east come from the National Weather Service in LaCrosse.

Sub-zero temps can also force some school districts to delay the start of classes because their diesel-fuel buses won’t start. Devore says  Charles City school buses are protected from the elements thanks to the district’s transportation center.

DeVore also reminds parents that if frigid temps cause family vehicle issues limiting your ability to get your student to school, you can call the district and can make arrangements for school bus pickup of your student.
