Public Input Sought on New Mason City School District Mascot

The Mason City School District is seeking suggestions and opinions from the public in efforts to determine a new mascot and nickname for the school.

In November, the Mason City School Board voted to end its use of the Mohawk name and image after complaints from the St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Council of Akwesasne, New York. A campaign by the Mason City Mohawk Save the Name Facebook group in December proved unsuccessful in lobbying the board to reverse its decision.

The district, along with the MCHS Student Senate, has created an online survey for ideas on what should replace the Mohawk mascot and nickname the school district has had for nearly a century. Submissions are due by February 22nd.

A link to the survey can be found here.

School officials have previously said they would like to have the new nickname and mascot ready by July 1st.
