Six Candidates File for Floyd County Supervisor Seats, One District Uncontested

The stage appears to be set for the Floyd County Board of Supervisors to get a complete makeover come January 1, 2023.

None of the current supervisors, Linda Tjaden, Roy Schwickerath or Doug Kamm, filed to seek re-election as the county switches from three seats elected at-large to three districts of equal population with each supervisor residing in the district they represent. The terms of Tjaden, Schwickerath and Kamm come to an end December 31st.

The final candidate to file by the Friday deadline for the June Primary was Democrat Joshua Mack, a current member of the Charles City School Board. He filed to run in the new District 2, which includes Charles City precincts 2 and 3, along with St. Charles Township North. Democrat Stewart Dalton and Republican Dennis Keifer have also filed to run in District 2.

Candidates for the new District 1, consisting of Charles City Precinct 1, plus St. Charles Township South and Ulster, Scott, Union, Pleasant Grove, and Riverton townships are Democrat Mark Kuhn and Republican Julius Bryant. Kuhn previously served as a Floyd County Supervisor from 1993 to 1998 and from 2011 to 2018. He also served in the Iowa Legislature from 1999 to 2010.

Republican Jeff Hawbaker is the only candidate to file in the new District 3, made up of Rockford, Rudd, Rock Grove, Floyd, Cedar and Niles townships.

Floyd County Recorder, Attorney. and Treasurer positions are also up for election this year, but only one candidate filed for each post. County Attorney Rachel Gibney will seek re-election; County Recorder Amy Assink, who was appointed to the position, has filed to run for the post full-time; and Jessie Lynn Holm filed to run for County Treasurer to replace Frank Rottinghaus who will not seek re-election.
