Development of Fine Arts Performance Center in Charles City to Take Time, Money

The community group, “Friends of Fine Arts,” continues their push for the construction of a new performance center in Charles City.

Co-Chair Tim Mitchell recently presented their case to the Charles City School Board, noting that making the center a reality is a daunting task.

Mitchell says their efforts to raise the necessary funding includes the availability of naming rights.

Mitchell says even before access to performing at the North Grand Auditorium became more limited due to private ownership of the former middle school building, the space was inadequate for student performances.

He added that continuing to “kick the can down the road” will only increase the cost, noting that Washington built their fine arts performance center about seven years ago for $7 million and the price has about doubled since then.
