Charles City Names Two Finalists for Superintendent Interviews

The Charles City School Board has named two finalists in its search for the district’s next superintendent.

Joseph Brown has served as superintendent of the Fairmont Area Schools in Minnesota, and is also interim superintendent of the Clear Creek Amana School District near Iowa City. He also previously served as superintendent of the Grand Meadow Independent School District and has experience as a high school and middle school principal.

John Howard is currently 7th-12th grade principal in the Independence School District. Howard has also previously served as a principal and curriculum director at Saint Edmond Catholic Schools in Fort Dodge.

The School Board has been working with Grundmeyer Leader Services to conduct the superintendent search. As a next step, the board and stakeholder interview teams will conduct final interviews with each of the two finalists on Tuesday during a special board meeting at 2:30 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church. 

The new superintendent will begin serving the Charles City Community School District effective July 1st and replace current Superintendent Mike Fisher, who’s resignation becomes effective June 30th. Fisher, who came to Charles City in 2018, will take the same position in his hometown of Oskaloosa.

CHARLES CITY, IA — The Charles City Community School District Board of Education has named two finalists in its search for the district’s next superintendent.

The finalists are Joseph Brown and John Howard. Each possesses significant experience
recruiting and retaining high-quality teachers and staff, building school and community relations, and promoting communities of care and support for students.

Brown has served as superintendent of the Fairmont Area Schools in Minnesota, and is also interim superintendent of the Clear Creek Amana Community School District near Iowa City. During his time as a district administrator, he has negotiated contracts with staff, expanded agricultural and career programming, and eliminated projected deficits. He previously was superintendent of the Grand Meadow Independent School District and has experience as a high school and middle school principal.

Howard is the current 7th-12th grade principal in the Independence CSD. His leadership has encompassed all aspects of school administration, including student achievement, discipline, curriculum and instruction, budgeting, strategic planning, facility management, human resource management, organizational change, and parent relations. Howard previously served as a principal and curriculum director at Saint Edmond Catholic Schools in Fort Dodge.

The Board of Education has been working with Grundmeyer Leader Services to conduct the superintendent search. As a next step, the board and stakeholder interview teams will conduct final interviews with each of the two finalists on Tuesday, April 12. The board plans to then discuss the candidates and reach a final decision soon after the formal interviews.

The new superintendent will begin serving the Charles City Community School District effective July 1, 2022.
