The Charles City, Decorah and Howard-Winneshiek school boards hold regular meetings tonight (04.11) and are scheduled to consider a resolution to remove Waverly-Shell Rock (WSR) from the Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC).
Last week, the NEIC Executive Board voted 5-to-1 to have WSR leave the league because the school has become so much larger than other NEIC schools, which has created competitive imbalance. The executive board is made up of the superintendents from each of the NEIC schools, which also includes Waukon and New Hampton, which don’t hold their next school board meetings until April 18th.
For the resolution to pass, it must now go to the school boards to decide how their superintendents should vote at the next executive board meeting. If passed again on a majority-plus-one vote, WSR, which cast the lone dissenting vote last week, would be out of the NEIC as of June 30, 2023; a move other league schools say would open the door to inviting other schools to join the conference.
Also on tonight’s Charles City School Board agenda is expected approval of a 3% raise for teachers as part of a contract agreement with the Charles City Community Education Association; plus, a $2 per hour increase over the next three years for support staff as part of their contract with the Charles City Community Educational Services Association.
