Charles City, Decorah, Howard-Winneshiek School Boards Vote to Remove Waverly-Shell Rock from NEIC

The Charles City, Decorah and Howard-Winneshiek School Boards voted Monday night to proceed with a resolution to remove Waverly-Shell Rock (WSR) from the Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC).

Last week, the NEIC Executive Board of superintendents from the league’s six member schools voted 5-to-1 to remove the Go-Hawks from the conference, with WSR the lone dissenting vote. The resolution was introduced by New Hampton, which cited the competitive imbalance created by WSR being almost three times their size. The resolution must be voted on again at a separate Executive Board meeting and must pass by a majority-plus-one vote.

With the Charles City, Decorah and Howard-Winneshiek School Boards voting in favor of the resolution Monday night, they will direct their superintendents to vote the same way at the next executive board meeting, which has not yet been set. That meeting won’t be before the Waukon and New Hampton School Boards can vote on the resolution during their next meetings on Monday, April 18th.

Charles City Superintendent Mike Fisher told the school board again Monday night that he is confident that the removal of WSR from the NEIC will open the door to other schools joining the league. He added that he’s talked with a handful schools previously about joining the NEIC, but Waverly-Shell Rock’s size was a roadblock to those schools.
