Dispatcher Job Stressful, Rewarding As Initial Responder to Emergency Calls

Being a dispatcher is more than just answering phone calls, but a dispatcher who answers your call is the vital beginning to getting you the help you need in emergency situations.

That’s John Gohr, the Department Head of the Communications Center in the new Floyd County Courthouse in Charles City and a 20-year veteran of being a dispatcher . He says staying calm as a dispatcher can be even more challenging in a small community, where you may even know the person involved in the emergency.

Gohr says being a good multi-tasker also helps as a dispatcher and adds the job is very rewarding knowing that, at the end of the day, you helped someone through a difficult situation.

Floyd County currently has a full-time Communications Dispatcher position open and applications are available at www.floydco.iowa.gov

April 10-16 is National Public Safety Telecommunications Week.
