Silos and Smokestacks Subject of Saturday Program at Floyd County Museum (Site of the Year)

The Floyd County Museum in Charles City was recently voted as the “Silos and Smokestacks People’s Choice “Site of the Year”, an honor you can learn more about during the museum’s next Chautauqua Guest Talk this Saturday (04.16).

Silos and Smokestacks National Heritage Area Executive Director Cara Miller said, “We are thrilled to recognize the Floyd County Museum as our People’s Choice site of the year. They have worked hard to maintain a quality museum and (have) stayed relevant for the community and visitors.”

Two other north Iowa partner sites also finished in the top three in the public voting, with the George Maier Rural Heritage Center in Elkader and the Ackley Heritage Center in Ackley, placing second and third.

Saturday, Floyd County Museum will host Laura Elfers, Silos and Smokestacks Educational Engagement Director and Floyd County native, for a presentation on what the organization is and does, what a partner site is, and how the Floyd County Museum is involved. The event will begin at 1 p.m. in the Museum Community Room and streamed live on the museum’s Facebook page. It’s free and open to the public.

The Floyd County Museum is also reminding area high school seniors that applications for a $500 scholarship from the Floyd County Historical Society and Museum is May 1st. Preference is given to a student who has been active at the museum and/or who intends to go into a history or related field. Applications are available through the museum website and Facebook page.
