Trying North Iowa Man for Murder Takes Joint Prosecution

Trying a first-degree murder case isn’t a regular occurrence for count attorneys, but getting prosecution help from the state is.

January 25, 2023 has been set as the date for trial to begin for 49-year-old Randy Patrie, charged with first-degree murder in the 2012 death of 70-year-old Kenneth Gallmeyer in Gallmeyer’s home north of Nashua. An investigation by the Chickasaw County Sheriff’s Office, with help from Charles City Police and the Iowa DCI, led to the discovery of items owned by Gallmeyer inside Patrie’s Charles City home, including a shotgun authorities say was consistent with the weapon that shot and killed Gallmeyer.

Chickasaw County Attorney David Laudner says trials like these are rare for county attorneys like himself.

Laudner says he’s been directly involved in one murder trial previously, about a year and a half ago in Emmetsburg, when he was Assistant County Attorney for Palo Alto County. Laudner was appointed Chickasaw County Attorney last September and says the case against Patrie was waiting for him on his desk the first day he took office.

Patrie is currently in the Fayette County Jail in West Union awaiting trial.
