An appeals hearing on a petition challenging the Floyd County budget for the 2022-23 fiscal year has been set for Wednesday.
The Coalition for Better County Government, led by Gordon Boge, filed the petition in April protesting the “budget of Floyd County, Iowa, for fiscal year 2022-23 and related expenses included therein on renovations to the Floyd County Courthouse and Floyd County Jail facilities and the tax levy to support said 2022-23 fiscal year budget and the expenditures of tax dollars for the year in question.”
For the second year in a row, the group is asking the state appeals board to take a look at the county’s budget, noting that “an increase of of 11.4% in one year (for the upcoming fiscal year) of the General Services Tax Levy is unsustainable and arbitrary in the face of adequate reductions in budget expenses and total county record property tax levy with an increase of 10.5% in one year.”
The Coalition also contends the County did not adequately inform the public on how the budget numbers were determined.
The State Appeals Board has set a public hearing on the petition for 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 11th, at the Youth Enrichment Center on the Floyd County Fairgrounds.
