Mason City Man Arrested in Shooting Investigation

A Mason City man is facing multiple weapons charges following his arrest Wednesday.
The Mason City Police Department says officers responded to a shooting at 8th Street and North Van Buren Avenue shortly before 8 p.m. Tuesday night. Witnesses provided a description and name of the suspect to responding officers. One person suffered a minor injury during the incident, but did not require medical attention. Several shell casings were recovered at the scene.
Authorities identified 27-year-old Kalab Van Scyoc as the shooter. Van Scyoc and the shooting victim are known parties to one another. Van Scyoc fled the scene on a bicycle with the firearm after the shooting.
Shortly after 3 p.m. Wednesday, officers executed a search warrant at a residence in the 100 block of 8th Street Southwest, where Van Scyoc was located and arrested. He was charged with intimidation with a dangerous weapon, a Class C felony; possession of a firearm by a domestic abuser and reckless use of a firearm causing bodily injury, both Class D felonies; and discharge of a firearm inside city limits, a simple misdemeanor.
MCPD was assisted in the execution of the search warrant by the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol, North Central Iowa Narcotics Task Force Special Operations Group and Mason City Fire Department.
