Some 80 northeast Iowa veterans participated in Wednesday’s Cedar Valley Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.
Charles City veteran Allen Williams describes his military experience that started when he was shipped out of Mississippi as a Navy SeaBee building homes in Vietnam at age 20.
Other Charles City vets on the honor flight included Alvin Davidson and Dennis Raab.
Veteran James Stokes of Janesville says his experience in Washington Wednesday was emotional as he visited the Vietnam Memorial.
Other area veterans making the trip Wednesday included Jerry Barta and Ronald Heller of New Hampton; Clement Havlik of Elma; and Lonnie Bibler, Eldon Armstrong, Roy Ford, Darwin Mauer, Darwin Ramker, David Schuknecht, and Woody White, all of Waverly.
Approximately 400 people and a big band welcomed home 80 northeast Iowa veterans when they returned from the 37th Honor Flight trip to Washington, DC, Wednesday night.
The Heroes Welcome is a tradition of the Cedar Valley Honor Flight, which is already planning their 38th trip in September and are seeking veterans from WW II, Korea and the Vietnam era to apply to go on the free trip. Veterans from throughout northeast Iowa are eligible.
