Man Charged with Killing State Patrol Trooper in North Iowa Found Guilty

After just two-and-a-half hours of deliberations, a jury Monday convicted the man accused of killing an Iowa State Patrol Trooper in north Iowa a year ago.

Michael Lang will be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, as is mandatory in the state of Iowa for First Degree Murder, after he shot and killed Sergeant Jim Smith during a standoff with law enforcement in Lang’s Grundy Center home. Lang has also been convicted of Attempt to Commit Murder, and Assault On A Peace Officer in the pursuit, altercation, and standoff.

The verdict comes after  a trial with three days of testimony for the prosecution and no evidence presented by the defense. A sentencing date for Lang has not yet been set.
