National Police Week Includes Peace Officer Memorial Day

National Police Week is a collaborative effort of many organizations dedicated to honoring America’s law enforcement community.

Sunday was Peace officer Memorial Day recognizing law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.

Charles City Police Chief Hugh Anderson says the frequency of which officers are killed on the job is on the rise.

Anderson says correctional officers killed in the line of duty are also recognized for their sacrifice.

The National Law Enforcement Memorial and Museum in Washington, D.C. held its 34th Annual Candlelight Vigil Friday night to honor the latest names to be added to the Peace Officers Memorial Wall.

In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day.
