New Hampton Works to Bankroll New Water Treatment Plant

With a price tag estimated between $26 and $40 million, the City of New Hampton has work to do to bankroll the construction of a new water treatment plant.

To help pay for the project, the City Council last week approved the latest round of increases to various City fees which will take effect July 1st. It marks the second year of a three-year phasing in of increases to the fee schedule, which Mayor Bobby Schwickerath says will raise funds for the plant, but has also become a necessity for the City.

Schwickerath says saving the money will help when applying for grants and shows the Iowa DNR they’re making a good-faith effort to bring the City up to current standards.

The DNR has given the City until 2036 to replace its water treatment plant.
