6-on-6 Girls Basketball Retrospective Tuesday at Charles City Library

In 1992, Osage won the next-to-last state championship in 6-on-6 girls basketball in Iowa.

For most of the 20th century, Iowa was known for its devotion to this unique form of women’s basketball in which three offensive players played against three defenders on both, yet separate, halves of the court. As other states abandoned 6-on-6 in the 1970s, Iowa remained committed to this half-court game until 1993, when the final 6-player championship was held.

Tuesday (07.12) evening at the Charles City Public Library, Director Annette Dean says they will host a special look back at Iowa’s 6-on-6 history and how it connects to the development of girls’ and women’s sport in the United States.

University of Iowa’s Jennifer Sterling will host the program starting at 5 p.m. Tuesday. She will also present the program at 1 p.m. Tuesday afternoon at Municipal Hall in Alta Vista.

Iowa gave schools the option of playing 6-on-6 or the standard 5-player girls basketball game we know today starting with the 1984-85 season, which culminated with the first split titles in 1985.

Charles City qualified for state in one of the last 6-on-6 player seasons in 1991.
