Chickasaw County Faces Challenges Staffing Sheriff’s Office

After having a deputy submit his resignation last week to take the same position in a neighboring county at a substantial pay increase, the Chickasaw County Sheriff’s Office approached the Board of Supervisors Monday to consider possible wage hikes.

It wasn’t long ago the County approved a 75-cents per hour pay hike across the board for the sheriff’s department, but Chief Deputy Ryan Shawver told the Board that may not be enough.

Sheriff Marty Hemann says the stiff competition for deputies is coming from more than just nearby departments.

Hemann and Shawver proposed upping pay by $2 per hour and, while acknowledging that might not be the cure-all, it’s a start.

Supervisors took no action and will likely continue the discussion at next week’s board meeting.
