Housing Projects in Charles City Hit Pause Button

Efforts to develop more residential living opportunities in Charles City have stalled in recent months.

City Administrator Steve Diers says construction of the new Birkwood Village Senior Living Center near Floyd County Medical Center is on hold after the project’s estimated cost of about $13 million continues to rise.

Diers says remodeling of the 1930’s the former middle school building on North Grand Avenue, expected to result in about 40 new apartments from developer Shawn Fautch, also has not yet advanced.

Diers notes that all 30-plus apartments of the Union House in downtown Charles City are now full.

The City also continues to look at additional opportunities to make more single-family housing available. Diers says two more twin homes with a total of four single-family units are expected to be constructed by Crown Point Builders by the end of the summer in the Parkside Development project at the site of the former Jefferson Elementary School.
