Waterloo Man Arrested After High-Speed Pursuit

A Waterloo man is facing a felony eluding charge after leading law enforcement on a high-speed pursuit during the holiday weekend.

Oelwein Police say they attempted to pull over a vehicle driven by 40-year-old Darryl Brown at about 2 a.m. Sunday morning after Brown failed to yield or slow down at two stop signs. Brown continued driving despite the lights and sirens of a police squad car in pursuit and reached speeds at least 45 mph over the limit on Highway 150 as well as residential streets.

Authorities say when Brown did stop and stepped out of his vehicle, he refused officers’ commands and tried to walk away. Brown also showed signs of being intoxicated, but refused a field sobriety test as well as a request for breath analysis at the police station, where he was also accused of hitting a female jailer several times.

Brown was charged with eluding with under the influence, a Class D felony; OWI – first offense and assault on a person in certain occupations, both serious misdemeanors; and two counts of interference with official acts, both simple misdemeanors. Brown was also cited for driving while license suspended, no insurance, reckless driving, open container and two counts of failure to obey traffic control device.
