Northeast Iowa Native Seriously Injured, Boyfriend Killed in Wisconsin Motorcycle Crash

A northeast Iowa native was seriously injured and her boyfriend killed after their motorcycle was hit by a van in southwest Wisconsin.

The Vernon County Wisconsin Sheriff’s Office says the collision occurred on State Highway 131 near Readstown, about 50 miles northeast of Prairie Du Chien, at about 5 p.m. Sunday, September 4th. A van driven by 45-year-old Mary Cano of Gays Mills, Wisconsin, was making a turn into a driveway when she failed to see the motorcycle driven by 35-year-old Kevin Fleming of Des Moines approaching from the opposite direction. The van struck the motorcycle, throwing Fleming and his passenger, 31-year-old Amanda Blake, also of Des Moines, from the bike.

Fleming was taken by ambulance to Vernon Memorial Healthcare in Viroqua, where he died from his injuries.  Blake, originally from Waukon, was airlifted to Gunderson Healthcare in La Crosse, with critical injuries. Neither Fleming nor Blake were wearing helmets.

Cano and an infant in her van were not injured.

A GoFundMe account has been established to help Blake with medical bills. A description says she “is coherent but has a fractured and broken pelvis, broken jaw, broken arm, and possible internal bleeding. Amber is a traveling nurse and was in between contracts so she does not have medical insurance.”

As of 5 p.m. Saturday, over $25,000 had been raised with a goal of $70,000. A link to the account can be found here.
