Former Charles City Resident Continues Bike Trek to the Gulf Coast

A former Charles City resident is continuing his bike trek from the U.S/Canadian border to New Orleans for a great cause.

Gary Petersen, who lived in Charles City for about seven years when he worked for then-Salisbury Laboratories, is riding his bike to raise money for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. He tells KCHA he’s also making good on a lifelong goal, sort of.

Petersen set out from Grand Portage, Minnesota on August 27th and says he passed the 500 mile mark about five miles north of Charles City last Thursday. It also put him a third of the way through his 1,500-plus mile journey.

He says the endeavor has been possible and more enjoyable thanks to hosts including Charles City Mayor Dean Andrews and his wife, Marcie; as well the bike supporting organization, Warm Showers.

As of Tuesday, Petersen had made it to Iowa City. You can follow his progress at his  Gary R Petersen Facebook page. You can also find a link to donate to St. Jude’s here.
