Security and a survey on the future facility needs of Charles City High School were questioned during Monday’s Charles City School Board meeting.
During the public comment period, Nancy Simerson, who was a substitute teacher in the district for eight years after 40 years at New Hampton, asked why the survey of facility options gave little consideration to the inclusion of a new auditorium for performing arts. She also acknowledged that it would take additional funding.
Simerson added that getting an auditorium for performing arts is a matter of equity, noting additions of new baseball and softball facilities in recent years.
Katelyn Holzer, a para-educator at the Middle School, who expressed concerns over building security during an early-August School Board meeting, spoke again on the glaring security breaches have continued since the start of the new school year.
Holzer again asked the Board to consider alarms on doors that are triggered after a door has been open for more than 60 seconds and for more threat and safety training for staff and students across all campuses.
Because concerns were expressed during public comments and not on the meeting agenda, the School Board could not comment or take action on the items addressed.
