Chickasaw County Taking Names of Those Interested in Becoming Next Sheriff

Last week, Chickasaw County Sheriff Marty Hemann announced his retirement effective January 20th.

Who and how that vacancy will be filled was discussed during Monday’s regular Board of Supervisors meeting. On a 3-to-0 vote, with Supervisors Matt Kuhn and Jason Byrne absent, Supervisors opted to allow those interested in being appointed to the post to submit their names to the County Auditor’s office by 4 p.m. December 22nd.

County Attorney David Laudner noted a special requirement for applicants outside of Chickasaw County.

After the December 22nd submission deadline, Supervisors then intend to appoint Hemann’s successor, but cannot do so until after the sheriff’s position becomes officially vacant.

In the interim, state code calls from Chief Deputy Ryan Shawver to take over as Chickasaw County Sheriff as of January 20th.

Whoever is ultimately appointed, that person would have to run for election next November to keep the job.

However, after the appointment is made, anyone from the public would have 14 days in which to file a petition to force a special election for the next sheriff.
