Trial for Man Accused of North Iowa Murder 10 Years Ago to be Delayed

The trial of a man accused in the shooting death of a Nashua man over 10 years ago could be delayed by seven months.

50-year-old Randy Patrie is charged with first-degree murder in the October 2012 death of 70-year-old Kenneth Gallmeyer at Gallmeyer’s residence north of Nashua. An investigation by the Chickasaw County Sheriff’s Office, Charles City Police and Iowa DCI, found various items owned by Gallmeyer inside Patrie’s Charles City home, including a shotgun believed to have killed Gallmeyer.

Before local law enforcement could proceed with their case, Patrie was sentenced in 2014 to life in federal prison on felony firearms charges and for being a career criminal. In 2018, Patrie was resentenced to 20 years in federal prison and his prosecution in Chickasaw County resumed.

Patrie’s trial is slated to start January 25th in Chickasaw County District Court, but it will be delayed. On Wednesday, Patrie waived his right to a speedy trial within one year of his arraignment and his attorney filed a motion to cancel the pre-trial hearing for Tuesday, December 13th, because they need more time to prepare for Patrie’s defense.

The state did not object to the defense’s request and Thursday the pre-trial hearing was moved to January 17th, when a new trial date will be determined. In the motion to continue the pre-trial hearing, Patrie’s attorney states that “based on counsel’s schedule, it is believed that the trial date will need to be after August 2023.”

Patrie is being held in the Fayette County Jail in West Union awaiting trial.
