Charles City Parking Project Gets Green Light to Move Forward

A Charles City parking project has the green light to move forward.Â
During their regular meeting June 5th, the City Council held a public hearing on the Mill Race Parking Project, which will close off regular through traffic from the corner of South Main Street starting as Riverside Drive and then curves north to become Jackson Street and intersects with Clark Street. The change will make the area safer for pedestrians frequenting local businesses like The Pub while creating more parking spaces for residents of The Union House.
Citizen Ryan Boehmer expressed concerns about future traffic problems it could create for Main Street.
Councilwoman Phoebe Pittman countered that while it’s too difficult to predict traffic issues down the road, she sees the move as advantageous to Main Street businesses.
The Council voted unanimously to approve the project and awarded a contract of about $495,000 to Lodge Construction of Clarksville. When work does start, but Councilman Patrick Lumley advises motorists to be prepared for some hiccups along the way.
The project has a completion date of October 27 and requires reopening of the parking lot no later than 30 working days after disruption starts.Â
