Charles City Mill Race Parking Project Could Begin in September

Start of construction for the “Mill Race Parking Project” in Charles City continues to be a moving target. 

The project will close off regular through-traffic on the street that starts as Riverside Drive and then curves north to become Jackson Street. The  change is expected to make the area safer for pedestrians from the corner of South Main Street to the Clark Street intersection while creating about 70 additional parking spaces.

City Administrator Steve Diers says a delay in the shipment of the permeable pavers for the project means work won’t begin until September.

While the street is expected to be reopened for vehicle parking about six weeks after construction commences, the contractor, Lodge Construction of Clarksville, will also have some extra time to finalize remaining work associated with the project.

Diers says the City will also do everything they can to accommodate the public’s access to the businesses in that area during construction.
