Mill Race Parking Project Underway in Charles City

A little over a month later than was originally planned, the Mill Race Parking Project in Charles City is underway.

The project will close off regular through-traffic on the street at the corner of South Main that starts as Riverside Drive and then curves north to become Jackson Street, which intersects with Clark Street. The change is expected to make the area safer for pedestrians and create about 70 additional parking spaces.

The contractor, Lodge Construction of Clarksville, began its initial work Tuesday, officially putting them “on the clock” to reopen the area in a timely fashion, according to City Administrator Steve Diers.

Diers adds that the City was fortunate to save a lot of taxpayer money to get the project completed.

However, because the permeable pavers essential to the City’s grant for the project were delayed in coming in, work was delayed from its late July start date.

Street Superintendent Cory Spieker says the parking lot behind the Union House apartments will also be closed off during the main construction of the project.  Signage has been put in place closing off the street as well directing motorists around the construction zone.
