Mill Race Parking Project Enters Second Week in Charles City
The Mill Race Parking Project in Charles City is now in its second week of construction.
The project will close off regular through traffic from the corner of South Main and Riverside Drive to the intersection of North Jackson and Clark streets. The change is expected to make the area safer for pedestrians and create about 70 additional parking spaces.
Mayor Dean Andrews says the contractor, Lodge Construction of Clarksville, could be done with the parking project by middle of next month.
Andrews says area businesses impacted by the construction are trying to take things in stride.
The cost of the project is covered completely by the $1 million “Sponsored Projects” rebate the City received from the DNR for upgrades to the Water Resource and Recovery Facility (WRRF).
Original estimates put the project at about $660,000, but the winning bid came in just under $500,000.
In addition to the street closure, the parking lot behind the Union House apartments is also closed off during the main construction of the project. Signage has been put in place closing off the street as well directing motorists around the construction zone.
