Northeast Iowa Man Could Serve 50 Years for Murder

After his request for a new trial was denied last week, a northeast Iowa man was sentenced to up to a half-century in prison for murder.Â
66-year-old Andrew Karvel of Lansing was originally charged with first-degree murder, a Class A felony, after he was accused of killing 83-year-old Daniel Lundy. Investigators alleged Karvel strangled Lundy to death on May 9, 2022, in their residence in Lansing.
On August 21st of this year, an Allamakee County District Court jury found him guilty of second-degree murder, thus Karvel avoided a mandatory life sentence.Â
Earlier this month, Karvel’s defense counsel filed to seek a new trial, but a judge rejected that motion last Wednesday (10.18).
Monday (10.23), Karvel was sentenced to up to 50 years in prison and must spend at least 35 years behind bars before becoming eligible for parole.Â
