Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over Campaign Continues Through New Year’s Day

The latest “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over†campaign through the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB) continues through Monday, January 1st.
The Special Traffic Enforcement Program (sTEP) involves the Iowa State Patrol, plus several local law enforcement agencies including the Chickasaw County Sheriff’s Office, which translates to an increased patrol presence according to Sheriff Ryan Shawver.Â
With more holiday parties and New Year’s celebrations coming this weekend, Shawver says there are many ways to avoid drinking and driving.
Shawver adds that there are also various rideshare programs available to get you home safely.
The New Hampton Police Department and Howard County Sheriff’s Offices are also participating in the sTEP program through New Year’s Day.
According to GTSB preliminary data, 35% of Iowa’s fatal crashes in 2022 involved an impaired driver. Last December almost 1100 drivers were charged with OWI on Iowa roads, with about 25% of those being second and third offenses.Â
