Summit Drops Two North Iowa Ethanol Plants, Cuts Pipeline Mileage in Floyd County

At least two north Iowa ethanol plants are no longer part of a proposed underground carbon capture pipeline after Summit Carbon Solutions announced Wednesday (05.13) that it’s “refining portions of its proposed Iowa project footprint to focus on the strongest and most efficient path forward.”
Summit says the move comes to help accelerate progress toward construction and delivery of long-term economic opportunities for agriculture and rural communities.
The filing submitted to the Iowa Utilities Commission (IUC) removes certain pipeline route segments, simplifying the overall project while maintaining the core infrastructure needed to move forward efficiently and responsibly.
Summit will remove proposed routes in Mitchell County involving Absolute Energy near Saint Ansgar and in Worth County involving Poet Bioprocessing near Hanlontown. The changes will also reduce pipeline mileage in Floyd, Crawford, Sioux, and Dickinson counties.
In total, the company’s refinements remove more than 400 landowners from the project footprint and reduce the overall scope of the project by approximately 200 miles.
Summit says the carbon pipeline project will continue to work with over two dozen core ethanol facilities, including Homeland Energy Solutions near Lawler, Valero Renewables near Charles City, Golden Grain Energy near Mason City, and Poet plants near Fairbank and Shell Rock.
If built, Summit says the project will travel west through Nebraska to advance to a dedicated sequestration solution in Wyoming.
