One Person Dies After Weekend Fire in North Iowa

One person has died following an apartment fire in north Iowa last weekend.

The Mason City Fire Department says they were called to The Manor on 3rd Street Northwest just after 6 p.m. Saturday night.  When they arrived on scene, light smoke was showing from a fifth floor window and the fire alarm was sounding.

Firefighters located the fire in apartment 549, where the fire sprinkler system had extinguished the fire. Firefighters then performed search and rescue and shut the fire sprinkler system down on the 5th floor to prevent additional water damage.

The resident from the apartment where the fire originated was transported to MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center and later died. The deceased has not been identified. Five other residents were displaced for one night.

Fire Marshal Jamey Medlin says the fire was accidental, caused by smoking materials.

The Mason City Police Department, Franklin County Ambulance Service, and apartment building maintenance staff also assisted at the scene.
