North Iowa Law Enforcement Officers Rescue Person from Fire

Law enforcement officers are being credited for rescuing a person from a north Iowa house fire.

The Howard County Sheriff’s Office says the fire was reported at a residence in the 13,000 block of Valley Avenue, about five miles south of Cresco, just after 1:30 p.m. Monday afternoon. The caller was trapped inside the house in an upstairs bedroom and was the only one in the home.

Sheriff Tim Beckman and Cresco Police Officer Ben Hillyer were first on the scene, entered the residence and located the subject in a locked room. After Beckman kicked in the door, he extinguished a small fire in the room, but smoke limited their ability to locate the subject immediately.

After finding the subject laying on the floor in the corner of the room, Beckman and Hillyer were able to evacuate the subject out of the house where emergency personnel provided medical attention to the subject. The extent of any injuries was not disclosed.

Both Sheriff Beckman and Officer Hillyer were treated for nonlife-threatening injuries
