Possible Bond Referendum for Charles City High School Improvements Still Alive

A potential bond referendum to help pay for improvements and upgrades to Charles City High School is far from official, but the school district will continue to explore the measure.

During their regular meeting Tuesday night, the School Board approved proceeding with the process of putting a bond referendum of upwards of $27 million before voters on March 7, 2023. The vote in favor of continuing was 4-1, with Board member Dr. David Schrodt casting the only no vote.

In addition to paying off the middle school, still seven years away, Schrodt also cited other competition for tax dollars, like the Floyd County EMS levy.

Fellow Board member Janiece Bergland acknowledged the competition, but said the time to move on the high school is now.

Interim Superintendent Dr. Anne Lundquist added that getting a bond referendum passed will take some work, but also noted that, in a recent survey of the community on the current high school facilities, almost 75% of respondents agreed something needs to be done to make the high school a better learning environment.

The Board is expected to take up the topic again during their November 14th meeting. In the meantime, the district will have Invision Architects continue revising design plans to keep the total price tag at $27 million or less.
