New Floyd County Sheriff’s K9 Helps Nab Suspect Who Fired Gun Near Deputy

A north Iowa man who fired a gun near a law enforcement officer is in custody after he tried to elude authorities.

The Floyd County Sheriff’s Office has arrested 39-year-old John Salocker of Nora Springs following an incident that began shortly after 10:30 p.m. Thursday night. Salocker has been charged with eluding involving OWI or drugs, a Class D felony.

According to the criminal complaint, while Deputy Luke Chatfield conducted a traffic stop just north of Rudd near 150th Street and Glass Avenue, another vehicle approached, stopped and fired a shot in the vicinity of the deputy. The vehicle then sped off and a pursuit ensued, reaching speeds of about 85 mph.

The vehicle was eventually found disabled, vacant and smelling of alcohol in the 1200 block of Dancer Avenue. Once law enforcement cleared the vehicle, new Floyd County K9 Sirius, who’s handler is Chatfield, was deployed leading officers into a harvested cornfield. With the possibility of the defendant being armed, a perimeter was established and additional law enforcement was called in.

Salocker was later located a short distance away from where the K9 had tracked him, laying on his back in the cornfield and he was taken into custody.

The Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office, Nora Springs Police, Iowa State Patrol, and Mason City Fire Department also assisted in the apprehension of Salocker.
