Charles City Man Charged for Causing Two-Vehicle Crash that Killed Mason City Man

A Charles City man has been charged with causing a head-on, two-vehicle crash last month that killed a Mason City man.

The Iowa State Patrol says the wreck occurred shortly after 11 p.m. on July 25th near the intersection of 265th Street and Yarrow Avenue, just west of Nora Springs. A Nissan Altima driven by 58-year-old Timothy Hoy was eastbound on 265th when it crossed the centerline and collided head-on with the westbound Pontiac G5, killing the driver, 41-year-old Stephen Miles.

At about 4 p.m. Thursday, the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office arrested Hoy on a Cerro Gordo County warrant charging him with homicide by vehicle, operating under the influence, a Class B felony.

According to court documents, authorities say Hoy admitted to consuming alcohol that day and had bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech, unsteady balance, and a strong odor of alcohol coming from his person. Hoy failed field sobriety tests and gave a breath sample which was over the legal blood alcohol content (BAC) limit of .08%. A blood sample later taken from Hoy showed the result was .179% BAC.

Hoy was also cited for driving on the wrong side of the roadway.

Two juveniles in the Miles vehicle were also injured in the crash, 17-year-old Tyler Miles and 16-year-old Jackson Gobeli, both of Mason City.

The Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office, Nora Springs First Responders and Mason City EMS also responded to the scene.
