Main Street in Front of Charles City Chicken Plant For Sale?

The one-block section of Main Street in front of the Pure Prairie Farms chicken processing plant in Charles City was closed off to regular traffic last week.

Vacating the street will allow PPF to plan for future expansion and make access into and out of the plant for transport trucks easier. The original plan called for the City to retain ownership of the street in case it needed to be reopened in the future.

During the City Council meeting on August 3rd,  City Administrator Steve Diers told council members that recents talks with PPF leadership indicate a willingness for the company to purchase the street instead.

Diers also gave  the Councilan update on when PPF could begin operating.

As part of rerouting traffic in that area, the Council approved renaming Lane Street between Main Street and North Grand Avenue to North Main Street.

To help motorists navigate the pending traffic changes, the City has added signage and painted pavement markings. The City wants to make the changes now to give motorists time to adjust to traffic patterns before winter.

The possibility of selling the street to PPF was again discussed during this week’s City planning session.
