Charles City Schools Continue Efforts to Improve Building Security for Students, Staff

Three weeks after a shooting that resulted in the deaths of two people and injuries to six others, Middle School students in Perry returned to classes  last Thursday (01.25) for the first time.

The shooting on January 4th came two months after a social media threat forced a soft lockdown at Charles City High School and Middle School.

Superintendent Anne Lundquist says preparing for those situations is a constant focus of the district’s Crisis Response and Life Safety Committee.

Lundquist says improving school security is her top priority.

And, while the district could make its schools into fortresses, Lundquist notes that can’t guarantee safety for students and staff.

Lundquist says the school district was recently approved for a grant of $50,000 to upgrade security measures at both Lincoln and Washington elementary schools and Charles City High School, while the security system is top of the line at the Middle School, which opened in 2016.

Students at Perry Elementary returned to their campus early last week, with High school students returned to classes Wednesday.
