Funnel Cloud Near Charles City Thursday (05.09) Not Full-Fledged Tornado

Residents near Charles City were on high-alert Thursday (05.09) due to the presence of a funnel cloud.

The funnel cloud was first reported by KCHA/KCZE at about 1 pm just southeast of Charles City. Following confirmation of the “tornado” by the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office, the National Weather Service in La Crosse issued a tornado warning at 1:10 pm, effective until 1:45 pm for southeast Floyd County.

Shortly after 1:30 pm, the weather had calmed to the point that the warning was canceled.

Floyd County Emergency Management Agency Director Jason Webster noted an image in a Facebook post after the storm that  contained a quote from Mike Kurz with the NWS in La Crosse.

Kurz said, “Foremost, these funnel clouds are hard to warn for due to the fact that the systems (non-supercell) that they are associated with don’t show rotation on radar, they are short-lived, and generally aren’t too damaging. This was a good reminder to always be weather aware out there!”

There were no reports of injuries or any significant damage.
