Water Main Break Closes Street Adjacent to Floyd County Courthouse

A weekend water main break has forced a two-block section of one of Charles City’s busiest roadways to be closed off to through traffic.

Crews were on site Saturday (02.03) morning to work on the water main break along Gilbert Street/U.S. Highway 18, south of the Floyd County Courthouse. Currently, the street remains closed from the intersection of Gilbert and South Main to the intersection of Gilbert and South Johnson Street.

City Street and Water Superintendent Cory Spieker says, “The water main break was repaired Saturday morning within hours of it being reported.  The impact to all residents and businesses was minimal. It was an emergency repair on a busy road, so we were not able to give all residents as much notification as we would have liked.

He adds that while the water main repair went smoothly, the damage that was caused to the city’s street was fairly significant.  The street will remain closed for the majority of this week so crews can repair the damaged area at South Johnson and Gilbert.

Motorists will need to route themselves around the closed section of the street until repairs are completed. City Administrator Steve Diers said during Monday (02.05) night’s City Council meeting it’s possible the street could be re-opened sometime on Tuesday (02.06).
