Charles City School District Facing Budget Shortfall

While no official action could be taken, the Charles City School Board met in a work session Monday (03.04) night to discuss how the district will address pending budget shortfalls for next school year.

In a letter to school parents and families Sunday (03.03), Superintendent Anne Lundquist said, “The district is depleting reserves more rapidly than it should and expenditures are exceeding our revenues. To mitigate this issue, the administration will be recommending the School Board make a number of adjustments to ensure the financial stability of the district in the future.”

In her letter, Lundquist also noted that the district has overspent by about $1.15 million in the current school year. In the 2024-25 school year, revenue is estimated at about $22 million with expenditures projected at $23.7 million.

During Monday’s work session in the High School Library, Lundquist outlined possible scenarios for budget adjustments across the district.

The Board also heard from Travis Squires with the investment banking firm, Piper Sandler, who reviewed the financial picture for next school year and projections for the next five years.

In January 2023, the school district made staff reductions as part of an effort to offset a $600,000 budget shortfall.
